Good Readers begin their reading with a purpose in mind. Sometimes, readers need to read to find information about a topic. Other times, the reason for reading is for enjoyment. At all times, good readers are active readers.
If you were reading a story, you will want to know what the story is about. The beginning of the story introduces characters in a setting. Take note of these features so that you will be able to understand how the story develops. There will likely be problems which may be solved by the end of the story.
After reading the story, think about the whole story. Ask yourself these questions:
- What were the events in the story?
- What is the main idea in the story or if the story has many ideas, what is the most important idea?
- What does the story mean to me (Connections)?
