Imagery of the Rock in Literature

Writers often use pictures or images to tell an “unsaid” part of a story. Let’s look at a few images and learn how they are used in literature.

Rock

A rock or a group of rocks can be used to suggest an obstacle that has to be overcome. An example of this meaning would be when someone must struggle to climb over rocks to reach a summit. To reach the summit requires perseverance to reach the goal. You may have heard the idiom “You are between a rock and a hard place”, which means that your choices are both difficult.

A rock may also be used to represent strength, stability, or dependability. For example, rock is often used as a building material because it is strong and durable. If you say to someone “You are my rock!”, you will mean that the person can be trusted and provides you with a sense of stability.

A rock is sometimes used to mean a safe hiding or resting place because animals and birds can rest or hide within the rocks.
